Joint Venture and American Leadership Forum Team Up to Advance California Reform
Monthly Public Discussion Sessions Start July 9

Joint Venture and the American Leadership Forum-Silicon Valley (ALF) have joined forces to strengthen Silicon Valley’s role in California governance and fiscal reform, issues that both organizations have identified as priorities.

Through this collaborative, ALF and Joint Venture have embarked on a program designed to coalesce the region’s leaders around a reform agenda, and join with other regional and statewide organizations to advance that agenda.

“With this partnership Silicon Valley can flex its muscle on statewide issues in a way we simply haven’t yet,” said Russell Hancock, President & CEO of Joint Venture. “The combined influence of our two organizations brings a powerful voice for our region to Sacramento.”
To jump start the discussion, Joint Venture and ALF, in partnership with the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, are launching a monthly series of public conversation sessions for regional leaders and community members.

The first session is scheduled for Thursday, July 9, from noon to 2 p.m., at the ALF offices in Santa Clara. James P. Mayer, Executive Director of California Forward, will kick off the conversation with an update on the status of reforms and the actions needed to achieve them. Registration is free for the event and lunch will be served, but space is limited.

Hundreds Pack Grand Boulevard Public Forum

The future of El Camino Real as a vibrant regional arterial took center stage at the Fox Theatre in Redwood City on June 20 when more than 350 people jammed a daylong forum to hear the vision and progress of the Grand Boulevard Initiative.

The initiative—which is led by a partnership of agencies and Joint Venture—seeks to develop El Camino Real as a people-centric and transportation oriented thoroughfare stretching 40 miles from Daly City to San Jose.

The audience heard from Congresswoman Anna Eshoo and the region’s top federal, state and local transportation officials, along with visionary urban designer Michael Freedman, about policies and programs underway to carry out the Grand Boulevard Initiative. Nineteen Peninsula and Silicon Valley cities have embraced the guiding principles of the initiative as a road map for the first multi-community project of its kind anywhere.

Caltrans Director Will Kempton, Metropolitan Transportation Commission executive director Steve Heminger and VTA deputy director of planning Chris Augenstein also spoke to the gathering of elected and appointed officials, city planners, business owners and citizens.
