Indira Balkissoon to lead federal outreach initiative

Joint Venture has appointed former EPA executive Indira Balkissoon to be Director of Federal Outreach Programs, a newly created role overseeing a regional effort to grow the federal government’s overall investment in Silicon Valley.

The campaign is in response to findings in Joint Venture's 2010 Silicon Valley Index that our region has not kept with its former pace in terms of federal funding, particularly in key strategic areas like clean tech, alternative energy, energy storage, health IT, disaster-related IT and homeland security. Balkissoon and Joint Venture will administer the program under the guidance of a steering committee that includes Silicon Valley Community Foundation (which provided a grant for the initiative), the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, the Bay Area Council, the NASA/Ames Research Center, UC Santa Cruz and Stanford University.

Senior DOE official exchanges info, views with Climate Prosperity Council

United States Department of Energy senior official Richard King briefed Joint Venture’s Climate Prosperity Council on his agency’s key areas of focus and engaged in rich two-way dialogue with the council on regional energy issues.

In the July 23 session at DLA Piper in Palo Alto, King specifically outlined the department’s EnergySmart Home Scale program and discussed the agency’s emphasis on building retrofits.

King heads the DOE’s Solar Decathlon Competition, which challenges 20 collegiate teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. The next Solar Decathlon will take place in fall 2011 in Washington, D.C.
