Joint Venture has received a grant of $83,000 from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to assist USGS with development and rollout of its “HayWired” earthquake scenario.

The HayWired scenario examines the effects on modern society from an earthquake sequence triggered by a magnitude 7.05 earthquake on the Hayward fault.

The grant is an extension to the cooperative agreement between the USGS and Joint Venture announced earlier this year and is funded through the Science Application for Risk Reduction (SAFRR) program at USGS.

Director, U.S. Geological Survey Innovation Center and Joint Venture climate partner

Like most people in the Bay Area, Jonathan Stock remembers exactly where he was at 5:04 p.m. on October 17, 1989 when the Loma Prieta earthquake struck the Bay Area.

Stock, Director of the U.S. Geological Survey’s Innovation Center in Menlo Park, a research geologist and an active partner in Joint Venture’s climate response work, was in his Cowell College dorm at UC Santa Cruz.

“Pretty much ground zero,” he recalls of the 6.9 magnitude quake.

Measure AA gets A+ from voters

green and blue logo

Joint Venture hails the recent passage of Measure AA, the San Francisco Bay Clean Water, Pollution Prevention and Habitat Restoration Program that creates a $12 annual parcel tax to fund a variety of shoreline protection and restoration measures.

“The historic passage of Measure AA marks the beginning of a new era for the S.F. Bay,” said San Mateo County Supervisor Dave Pine, who chairs the S.F. Bay Restoration Authority and serves on Joint Venture’s board.

“Measure AA will fund the restoration of thousands of acres of tidal wetlands which will both improve the Bay ecosystem and provide critical natural flood protection from extreme storms and sea level rise. Bay Area voters have sent a resounding message that they want to restore and protect the Bay for future generations.”
