Joint Venture launches Smart Region Initiative

Smart Region webpageApril 19, 2017 – Joint Venture Silicon Valley has launched its first Smart Region Initiative, a coalition of local governments, businesses and residents working together to improve the quality of life in Silicon Valley through the targeted and holistic application of technologies.

Founding members of the initiative are the County of San Mateo and the cities of San Jose, Morgan Hill, Palo Alto, San Leandro, Cupertino and Mountain View.  The initiative will focus on education, collaboration and expertise sharing to drive deployment of regionally-aligned Smart City systems in Silicon Valley. Initial goals for the initiative will be to work on regional approaches to Open Data, Communication Technologies and Digital Inclusion.

"Done right, Smart Cities holds great promise for creating efficient civic technology systems to manage and improve interaction between residents and government,” said David Witkowski, who will lead the initiative. “In a megaregion like Silicon Valley, it's important that we collaborate, share information, and work towards unified technology goals in smart city deployments."

“As America’s technology leader, Silicon Valley should also blaze the trail forward in civic technology,” said Russell Hancock, CEO of Joint Venture.“This is Joint Venture at its best – bringing together local leaders across municipal borders to address challenges for the entire region.”

The Smart Region Initiative consortium builds on existing relationships with technology companies, academia and local government leaders to drive a coordinated public-private sector effort to aggregate smart city programs.

The initiative steering committee meets later this month to begin the process of shaping its work and expanding membership to other cities and private companies.
