Derek Ouyang

Affiliated Researcher, Data Analytics, Silicon Valley Institute for Regional Studies

Derek Ouyang joined the Institute’s Research Team as an Affiliated Researcher in 2024. He contributes to the Institute’s work involving data collection, synthesis, and presentation, bringing a depth of expertise to the organization in data analytics for community benefit.

His work with the Institute began in 2020, establishing a partnership between Joint Venture and the Stanford Future Bay Initiative where he served as a Lecturer and Program Manager. As a mentor to Stanford student Simone Speizer, he led the creation of the Silicon Valley COVID-19 Dashboard – tracking daily changes in regional COVID cases, testing, hospitalizations, and deaths for the public benefit.

Since then, Derek has worked extensively on the Institute’s sub-county-level metrics. He has also advanced the tracking of Silicon Valley’s public company stock market trends, creating the first-ever online dashboard of its kind. The Silicon Valley and San Francisco Public Company Stock Tracker includes daily updates to individual stock prices, regional aggregate market cap, and comparisons to key stock market indices.

Derek holds dual bachelor’s degrees in Civil Engineering and Architectural Design, and a master’s degree in Structural Engineering. In 2013, he served as the project manager for Stanford University’s first-ever entry to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon. He is currently the Executive Director of City Systems (city.systems) and Research Manager in Stanford University's Regulation, Evaluation, and Governance Lab (reglab.stanford.edu).
