Climate Change

Joint Venture engages with dozens of regional and local public and private agencies, municipalities, businesses and other stakeholders in programs and activities designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote sustainable energy and improve the quality of life for all.

Beyond Gasoline

Through Joint Venture’s Beyond Gasoline Initiative, Silicon Valley will become a world leader in reducing gasoline consumption and will inspire other regions to do the same. Just as Silicon Valley has led the effort to eliminate natural gas from new construction, through this Initiative it will lead the effort to transition rapidly beyond gasoline.

Silicon Valley, home to the world’s best-selling electric vehicle and cutting-edge electric vehicle charging technology, is already moving in the right direction. It has one of the highest rates of electric vehicle adoption in the country and many of its cities and businesses are making bold sustainability plans. This work will build on that momentum, achieving gasoline reduction at the speed and scale required to meet the urgency of the climate crisis. It will spur stronger policies and actions targeted at gasoline reduction; it will educate and empower citizens to make the transition from gasoline use to cleaner forms of mobility. These measures will advance climate, health, and equity in Silicon Valley and pave the way for beyond-gasoline measures at the state and federal level.

At Joint Venture, The Climate Center initiative will launch under Climate-Safe California. The initiative provides a comprehensive platform to bring California’s climate targets and policies into alignment with current science.

The organization has played a pivotal role in California’s transition to community choice agencies for electric power distribution, which increased from two agencies in 2014 to 21 agencies today.

Climate Task Force

Formed in 2007, the Joint Venture Public Sector Climate Task Force includes representatives from every city, town and county in Silicon Valley, plus several special districts and other public agencies. The group also includes advisory members from local organizations working on sustainability and energy conservation and several affiliate members from for-profit companies in relevant sectors.

The goal of the Task Force is to develop effective collaborative solutions for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from public agency operations and to provide a neutral forum for city and county government agencies and special districts to learn from each other and from others about climate protection programs.
