Joint Venture taps San Mateo County CIO Jon Walton as co-chair of its Wireless Communications Initiative 

headshot May 25, 2016 – Joint Venture Silicon Valley has appointed Jon Walton, chief information officer for the County of San Mateo, as public sector co-chair of the organization’s Wireless Communications Initiative (WCI).

The WCI brings together the wireless industry, local governments, businesses and residents to improve the wireless and broadband infrastructure in Silicon Valley and works to keep the region a center of wireless leadership and innovation. The private sector co-chair of the WCI is Dr. Edwin Tasch, chief of neurology at Kaiser Permanente's Santa Clara Medical Center.

“Jon is an award-winning leader in the municipal technology world, recognized for his leadership and vision in deploying the San Mateo County public Wi-Fi network, a multi-jurisdictional high speed fiber network, a shared service APCO P25 interoperable public safety radio system, and the county’s award winning Open Data Program,” said David Witkowski, Executive Director of the Wireless Communications Initiative.

“Over the past six months the Wireless Communications Initiative has expanded its vision to cover Smart Cities and the Internet of Things,” added Witkowski. “Jon’s the ideal person to help us extend and strengthen these efforts.”

Walton has over 20 years of experience in the public and private sectors and previously worked for Unisys, the City of San José and the City and County of San Francisco. Jon holds a BS in Land Use Planning and Management/Development from Humboldt State University.
