March 17, 2017 – The Joint Venture board of directors today elected Oakland Athletics President Dave Kaval, San Jose Earthquakes Chief Operating Officer Jared Shawlee and Santa Clara County Water District Board Chair John Varela as its newest members.
Dave Kaval has been with the Athletics since last November. He also has been President of the San Jose Earthquakes since 2010 and previously served on the Joint Venture board in that role. He also serves on the boards of the San Jose Sports Authority, the Silicon Valley Organization and the Bay Area Council. A Cleveland native, Kaval holds a B.A. with honors in international relations and an MBA from Stanford University.
Jared Shawlee has been with the Earthquakes since 2008 and previously served management roles in ticket sales and strategy and corporate partnerships. He was honored as Major League Soccer’s Corporate Partnerships Executive of the year in 2015. Jared earned his bachelor’s degree in marketing and finance from Cal Poly and a MBA from Notre Dame.
John Varela was appointed to the water district board in December 2015 to fill a vacant seat and was subsequently elected in November 2016 to serve the remainder of the term through December 2018. He represents the district on several committees. Varela previously served as a Morgan Hill mayor and council member, volunteers with several community organizations and has been an entrepreneur in the solar/clean energy, bio-fuel and toy industries.
