Joint Venture Food Recovery Partners with Loaves & Fishes

June 24, 2019 – Joint Venture Silicon Valley and Loaves & Fishes Family Kitchen today announced a partnership that will enable Joint Venture’s Food Recovery initiative, known as A La Carte, to transfer day-to-day operations to Loaves & Fishes Family Kitchen. Effective immediately, A La Carte operations will be managed by Loaves & Fishes, including pick-up and delivery operations and the fleet of trucks that deliver meals to people who are in need.

“At Joint Venture, it is our objective to recognize needs in the community and to work toward innovative solutions. This collaboration exemplifies our mission and we couldn’t be in better hands,” said Russell Hancock, Joint Venture President and CEO. Until now, Loaves & Fishes has not provided this service as they wanted the assurance that food safety protocols—always a top priority—were in place. A La Carte was able to provide that assurance.

A La Carte reduces hunger by gathering nutritious prepared meals six days a week from regional university and corporate campuses, such as Stanford and Facebook. The program then distributes the meals directly to people in need in a no-cost, convenient, and dignified manner. Over 175,000 meals have been distributed since September 2018. The initiative has raised over one million dollars in funding to support the operations of five trucks, all of which will be operated by Loaves & Fishes by the end of 2019. Seed funds for start-up included $270,000 from Joint Venture board member John A. Sobrato, who also funded two trucks with his family.
"This new collaboration will enable A La Carte to increase its reach and sustainability. It will streamline operations of the program, and it will help us get to the next level," said Robin Franz Martin.

Loaves & Fishes has provided hot prepared meals to low-income families, children, seniors, veterans, the disabled and the homeless since 1980. With the addition of A La Carte, Loaves & Fishes will double their capacity from 525,000 meals to 1,000,000 meals each year. “We are delighted to incorporate A La Carte as part of our portfolio. It will enable us to extend our services even further to the often-unrecognized hungry people in our community,” said Gisela Bushey, CEO of Loaves & Fishes. “When Joint Venture approached us to consider joining forces regarding A La Carte, our review showed us just how well the program aligned with our food safety protocols, and, most importantly, with our mission to serve anyone who comes to us in need of a nutritious meal, no questions asked.”

A La Carte currently distributes family-sized portions of prepared meals to schools and community centers in Cupertino, East Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Mountain View, Sunnyvale, and San Jose. A new partnership with Facebook will expand the A La Carte’s reach to additional locations. Loaves & Fishes and Joint Venture will continue to work together to recruit corporate, academic, and community food donor partnerships and to develop additional nonprofit and distribution points throughout Santa Clara and San Mateo counties.
