Joint Venture transitions disaster readiness initiative to National Disaster Resiliency Center at Moffett Field
November 8, 2011 – Joint Venture Silicon Valley announced today that its Disaster Preparedness Initiative has successfully transitioned to a freestanding National Disaster Resiliency Center based at Moffett Field, the first collaborative facility of its kind on the West Coast.
Incubated for the past two years by Joint Venture with important seed funds from the Department of Homeland Security, Santa Clara County and the California Endowment, the new NDRC is located at the NASA Research Park.
“This achieves the original goal of our disaster preparedness initiative – to establish a strategic and logistical support center where Silicon Valley can plan for and respond to a major disaster in the region,” said Russell Hancock, CEO of Joint Venture.
“This is the essence of Joint Venture’s mission, to bring government, business and communities together to meet Silicon Valley’s challenges,” Hancock added. “We are grateful to NASA, Traiden Global Solutions and the county for their roles in bringing this project to fruition.”
Steve Jordan, the CEO of disaster consulting firm Traiden Global Solutions, which Joint Venture originally retained to implement the project in April 2010, will serve as CEO of the NDRC.
“The NDRC will be vital to this region as a training and staging center for emergency response agencies and personnel when disaster strikes,” said Jordan. “We are very optimistic about the potential and capabilities of the NDRC.”
The NDRC has seated seven of its fifteen available board positions, with Raelene Wong, director of global business continuity for Applied Materials, seated as the chair.
In September, the NDRC brought together 72 of the leading companies, utilities and public safety agencies from Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties to discuss the partnership between the public and private sector in the event of a disaster. Similar sessions will continue on a quarterly basis with tabletops and workshops.
The NDRC has co-hosted events, provided workshop presentations and keynote speeches for and with its partners, which include NASA, Carnegie Mellon, Cal-EMA, FEMA, Association of Bay Area Governments, Bay Area Council and Continuity Insights.
The NDRC has also formed a strategic alliance with SRI International to facilitate a bicoastal agreement with the Applied Foundation for Homeland Security on Long Island in New York.
