| The 2022 Silicon Valley Poll |
Joint Venture will hold a briefing on the 2022 Silicon Valley Poll — illuminating attitudes about the housing crisis, remote work, and life in the Bay Area — on Tuesday, October 4, at 9:00 a.m. PDT. The one-of-a-kind annual survey is placed in the field by Joint Venture’s research arm, the Silicon Valley Institute for Regional Studies, in partnership with The Mercury News and Change Research. The briefing — a Zoom webinar — will feature detailed analysis of the results and probe deeper questions about the tenor of our times. Ethan Varian and Marisa Kendall, two of the Mercury’s most insightful journalists will join Joint Venture CEO Russell Hancock for a panel discussion; the event will also include poetry and performances by local artists. There is no charge to attend. This year’s Poll and briefing are generously supported by a gift from Kaiser Permanente. |

| A report card for Bay Area transit |
Seamless Bay Area and Joint Venture, along with several Bay Area civic groups jointly released a Transit Transformation 1-Year Report Card tracking the region’s progress toward integrating the region’s 27 transit systems. The report card marked the one-year anniversary of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission’s adoption of the ambitious Transformation Action Plan aimed at growing transit ridership. It shows a mixed record of progress toward transforming Bay Area transit. “Creating the Transformation Action Plan was the easy part,” said Joint Venture CEO Russell Hancock. “Now we have to do the hard work, and constantly revisit it to hold ourselves accountable.” |

Unemployment grows slightly Silicon Valley’s unemployment rate grew to 2.3% in August, an 0.2 percentage point increase from July. Overall employment levels in the region rose by nearly 4,300 workers, while the number of unemployed workers rose by almost 3,100, reaching the highest level (34,400) since March (36,100), and nearly 7,700 more than the most recent low in May. Read the release Q2 Commercial Space Report: Uptick in leases outpaces last year Through the first half of 2022, Silicon Valley’s commercial space indicators paint a complex picture through diverging trends, according to the latest analysis from Joint Venture’s Institute in partnership with JLL Silicon Valley. Leasing volume within the region showed a surprising uptick, slightly outpacing last year’s figures and running counter to a trend of increasing vacancy rates. The pandemic-period trend toward leasing of smaller spaces continued. Asking rents have plateaued despite outsized levels of inflation reported this year, indicating a reluctance by landlords to raise rents in order to remain competitive in the market. | Joint Venture Food Recovery lays the groundwork for best practices statewide |
Robin Franz Martin, Executive Director of Joint Venture’s Food Recovery initiative was a featured presenter at the California Resource Recovery Association Conference (CRRA) in Oceanside in early September. Her two sessions focused on food recovery and the state's implementation of SB 1383. In one presentation, Martin focused on the County of Santa Clara’s approach to assessing the area’s ability to collect and distribute surplus food, as required to comply with SB 1383. On behalf of the CRRA Best Practices subcommittee, Martin focused needed attention on the role of collecting and disseminating best practices for food recovery methods and systems statewide. She provided resources plus practical and actionable information for attendees from across California. She shared guidance on surplus edible food recovery, food safety for edible donations, and coordination between jurisdictions working on SB 1383. Martin also led a discussion group at the technical Council lunch during the conference and noted that the food for the luncheon “…was recovered and delicious!” |

| A new co-chair for Joint Venture board |
The Joint Venture board elected John Tenanes as its new co-chair at its quarterly meeting. Tenanes is vice president of global facilities and real estate at Meta and succeeds Dave Wehner as co-chair. He joins the standing co-chair, Nicole Taylor, CEO of Silicon Valley Community Foundation. Tenanes leads a team responsible for Meta’s physical workplace footprint for its Bay Area headquarters and facilities across multiple continents. Russell Hancock applauded the selection. "Dave Wehner gave remarkably to our board, and in his final act of service he helped us recruit another Meta superstar to take the reins. John Tenanes brings an amazing array of on-the-ground experience getting things done, and he will bring that same instrumentality to Joint Venture.” |
