| Annette Nellen named a Fellow |
 |
Annette Nellen has been named as a fellow at Joint Venture’s Silicon Valley Institute for Regional Studies, Joint Venture’s research arm. Nellen is a professor and director of San José State University's graduate tax program where she teaches courses in tax research, accounting methods, individual tax, property transactions, employment tax, leadership, ethics, and tax policy. No stranger to Joint Venture, Nellen was involved with the Joint Venture Tax Policy Group and chaired the panel from the late 1990s through 2004. “We're delighted to welcome Professor Nellen because she is a scholar in the national class,” said Russell Hancock, CEO of Joint Venture, and President of the Institute. “But she's also that particular kind of scholar who makes the esoterica of tax policy accessible and relevant to decision makers and the policy establishment. She did this previously at Joint Venture as the leader of our Tax Policy Group, and we're excited to have her back as a Fellow.” |

Robin Franz Martin is the Executive Director of the food recovery initiative at Joint Venture. One glance at her CV tells the story of someone who is committed to making the world a better place. Robin’s food recovery work at Joint Venture began as a grass roots project that retrieved surplus food from corporate campuses and delivered it to those in need. Her current focus is to provide a model for Bay Area jurisdictions in alignment with SB 1383 which aims to reduce organic waste and methane emissions from landfills. With a team of four, the Food Recovery Initiative is contracted to manage the Santa Clara County Food Recovery Program. It also convenes the Silicon Valley Food Recovery Council, and is leading a pilot project to bring recovered food directly to affordable housing sites throughout Santa Clara County. “We upended expectations and built a new model of collaboration and accountability that communities across the state and nation can emulate – whether for food recovery or around other pressing issues,” said Supervisor Susan Ellenberg, President of the Santa Clara Board of Supervisors and Co-Chair of Joint Venture’s board of directors. |
