| Bay Area residents down on downtowns, increasingly frustrated by homelessness, reluctant to pay for transit |
| Bay Area residents regard housing affordability and homelessness as the most pressing issues and believe the region is headed down the wrong track, according to the 2023 Silicon Valley Poll, an exclusive survey conducted in overseen by Joint Venture, the Institute for Regional Studies, and in partnership with the Bay Area News Group. A new concern also ranks high: the state of the Bay Area’s downtowns. "There’s no single culprit and yet there is a headwind of factors that are keeping us on edge," said Russell Hancock, Joint Venture's CEO who provided in-depth analysis on the survey at the third-annual Silicon Valley Poll Briefing October 4. Hancock was joined by a panel of experts who unpacked the results of the poll and provided additional insight on policy options for downtowns, homelessness, and transit. |

| Institute offers a new look Silicon Valley’s “hot” housing markets using mobile device data |
| With one of the highest priced housing markets in the country, Silicon Valley’s median home sale price shot up to an all-time high of $1.53 million in 2022. The hottest Silicon Valley housing markets this summer were Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, and Fremont. Is demand changing the demographics within those sub-regional areas? Are people upgrading to new homes where they already live, or are new residents moving in? Where are our new neighbors coming from? To answer these and other questions, the Silicon Valley Institute for Regional Studies, Joint Venture’s research arm, partnered with Unacast to tap into its aggregated mobile device location data. The analysis offers zip-code-level insights on characteristics ranging from age to poverty rate to migration patterns. |

| Guaranteed Basic Income in Santa Clara County |
| Joint Venture’s Institute recently completed a report in partnership with the University of Washington School of Social Work, Center for Women’s Welfare on the merits of guaranteed basic income (GBI). Supported by a 2022-23 grant from the County of Santa Clara through Supervisor Susan Ellenberg’s office with additional support from Silicon Valley Community Foundation, Modeling Guaranteed Basic Income & Household Income Adequacy in Santa Clara County examines how GBI programs can help move families out of poverty and into economic security. The study found that there are approximately 129,400 households in Santa Clara County with inadequate income to meet their own basic needs. A GBI program would provide impactful reductions in the financial burdens of these households. |

| A Landscape of Change |
Joint Venture’s research arm, the Silicon Valley Institute for Regional Studies, recently joined with the Silicon Valley Council of Nonprofits and Thrive Alliance to produce A Landscape of Change and Impact, a report on issues confronting nonprofits in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. The groups produced the report to support the nonprofit community and its partners by offering an overview of organizational health, workplace practices, racial justice and equity, and strategic alliances. Their objective is to provide a perspective on how communities may invest in the future of nonprofits. “Collecting and aggregating a range of quantitative data about Silicon Valley’s exempt organizations — mission classifications, budget sizes, geographic distributions — complements qualitative data collected through surveys and focus groups,” says Kelly Costa, Affiliated Researcher, Nonprofits & Philanthropy, at the Institute. “In combination, these data create a more complete picture of the current state of our region’s nonprofit sector. This project with SVCN and Thrive further demonstrates the potential of interagency partnership, and we’re committed to building out the Institute's 'nonprofit data homebase’ for future analysis and reporting.” |
