| 2024 State of the Valley conference is March 1 |
San Jose State University will be the location of the 2024 State of the Valley conference, taking place the morning of Friday March 1. The "town hall"-style gathering engages community members and their leaders, across every major sector. Now in its 20th year, the event will feature the release of the 2024 Silicon Valley Index, a closely-watched report measuring the vitality of the region's economy and the health of the community. Joint Venture's research team will present this year's findings, and a host of experts and practitioners will be on hand to unpack the results and take up audience questions. As in previous years, the 2024 installment will be a hybrid event, with 500 in-person participants at San Jose State, while simultaneously streaming to an audience of many hundreds across the region and beyond. Streaming participants enjoy full access to the proceedings, the ability to pose questions and to chat with other audience members, and download their own copy of the 2024 Index. Registration, whether in person or online, will be available starting on December 11. Table sponsorships are available now. |

| Joint Venture enters fourth decade with a new lens |
2023 marks Joint Venture’s 30-year anniversary. Three decades in, it remains the only organization that gathers leaders and change-makers across all sectors — business, government, academia, labor, and the broader community — to spotlight issues, launch projects and work toward innovative solutions. To mark the anniversary, Joint Venture’s board of directors has adopted a new strategic plan that will double down on its mission and set off a capacity-building effort over the next five years with three distinct pillars. The three foundational pillars call for Joint Venture’s research arm, the Silicon Valley Institute for Regional Studies, to grow its research expertise and its output; for Joint Venture to continue to convene the region; and a plan for a financial sustainability for the long-haul success of the organization. The pillars are buttressed by objectives that strengthen the strategic process by expanding the breadth and depth of research offerings, by casting a wider net of distribution channels, and by catalyzing action among regional decision makers. Perhaps most importantly, the plan intends to secure its future through new channels of financial revenue. “Meeting the needs of the next decade will call for more heft,” says Russell Hancock, CEO of Joint Venture. “It will require new patterns, new partnerships, better execution on our part, and markedly higher levels of investment from the region.” |

| Special recognition for Rachel Massaro |
Rachel Massaro, Vice President of Joint Venture, and Director of Research at the Silicon Valley Institute for Regional Studies was honored with a commendation from the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors for their work with Joint Venture and the Silicon Valley Institute for Regional Studies. Susan Ellenberg, President of the Board of Supervisors, presented Massaro with the award on November 17. Ellenberg called Rachel a “nationally recognized leader in data analysis, including serving as the primary researcher and energetic scholar behind the annual Silicon Valley Index, an essential tool for Silicon Valley leaders across economic sectors for more than 25 years.” “It was an honor presenting Rachel with a commendation this week and I want to say thank you again for all the hard work!” said Supervisor Ellenberg. |
| Joint Venture Board adds Brent Harris of Meta |
The Joint Venture Silicon Valley board of directors elected Brent C. Harris to the board at its quarterly meeting November 17. Harris is Vice President of Augmented Reality at Meta Platforms, Inc. In his role at Meta Platforms, Harris is focused on how to build the next mobile computing platform for people and businesses across the globe. Previously, Harris was the vice president of governance at Meta where he initiated new ways to govern artificial intelligence and the Metaverse. He led the company’s work to build the Oversight Board for Facebook and Instagram. He was named an “expert in international regulation” by Wired. “I am enthusiastic about taking on this role at Joint Venture to contribute towards tackling crucial economic and societal challenges in Silicon Valley," said Harris. Russell Hancock, CEO of Joint Venture, welcomed Harris by saying, "We are thrilled to welcome Harris to our board, where his exceptional expertise will bring invaluable insights.
