U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris of California will headline Joint Venture’s 2018 State of the Valley conference next month in San Jose.

Her remarks will look at Silicon Valley in the broader national scene. Is Silicon Valley in a “bubble” and out of step with national trends? What is the view from our nation’s capital and what do recent developments there portend for our region?

The State of the Valley conference, which also features comprehensive reports and experts on our regional ecosystem, is Friday, February 9, from 8 a.m. to noon at the McEnery San Jose Convention Center.

What’s on the horizon for Silicon Valley? Where is innovation taking us next? What is the promise and potential of some of the most rapidly progressing technologies (such as artificial intelligence machine learning), and what will be their disruptive effects? What broad macro trends are shaping Silicon Valley and how should we respond?

Two distinguished experts, Jure Leskovec, Chief Scientist at Pinterest and a Stanford University Associate Professor of Computer Science, and Paul Saffo, a provocative futurist and Consulting Professor at the Stanford University School of Engineering, will discuss these questions.

Silicon Valley has had an amazing 75-year run of economic expansion. Our dynamism is the envy of the world, but our growth also creates enormous challenges. Our two biggest challenges continue to be transportation and housing.

In this session, we’ll hear from our region’s top transportation official, Steve Heminger, Executive Director of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, and a national expert on affordable housing, Carol Galante, Donald Terner Distinguished Professor in Affordable Housing and Urban Policy and Director of the Terner Center for Housing Innovation at the University of California at Berkeley.

The Index has been telling the Silicon Valley story since 1995. The indicators measure the dynamism of our economy and the health of our community, highlighting challenges and providing an analytical foundation for decision making. The Index is the basis for all of our work and the State of the Valley agenda is driven by the Index data.

Russell Hancock, President and Chief Executive Officer of Joint Venture and President of the Silicon Valley Institute for Regional Studies, will give a detailed briefing on the data and trends in the newest Index.

More on the Index and last year’s findings.
