Joint Venture convening wireless carriers and cities on technology policy

A coalition of local governments has asked Joint Venture to facilitate roundtable discussions among Silicon Valley counties, cities and towns and the wireless industry on pricing, model codes, ordinances, municipal needs and best practices because of its technical expertise and policy insight on wireless communications.

The Silicon Valley Wireless Working Group (SVWWG) has been meeting informally over the past two years to share information and ideas about how to manage applications for wireless facilities in the public right-of-way. Recently SVWWG tapped David Witkowski, executive director of Joint Venture’s Wireless Communications Initiative, to facilitate the roundtable last month to promote dialogue and mutual understanding between governments and the industry.

The City of Campbell hosted the meeting May 7, attended by AT&T Mobility, Verizon Wireless, ExteNet Systems, Mobilitie, Crown Castle, the California Wireless Association and several local governments. Feedback was positive and future meetings are planned. “The SVWWG is a natural extension and amplification of the work we've been doing in the WCI over the past decade,” says Witkowski.

Joint Venture is working closely with the USGS, the state and Silicon Valley businesses on regional preparedness in the event of a major quake along the Hayward fault.

“A host of partners have contributed time, effort and knowledge to HayWired to help identify the possible impacts of a major earthquake and start building the collaborative networks we’ll need to bounce back as a region,” the article noted.
