Santa Clara County recognizes Joint Venture for food recovery work |

Santa Clara County’s Recycling and Waste Reduction Commission has recognized Joint Venture’s food recovery efforts with additional grants to continue its work. The County's most recent grant ($80,000) recognizes the initiative's success in reducing, re-using and recycling food and materials that would otherwise go to the landfills. Joint Venture's work has also been supported by generous donations from Wells Fargo Bank. |

Joint Venture Opines: Enough Gas Already |

In two recently-published opinion pieces, Joint Venture issued a charge for Silicon Valley to take the lead in reducing gasoline consumption, the largest contributor to greenhouse gases. In a Mercury News editorial Janelle London, executive director of Joint Venture's "Beyond Gasoline" initiative, calls for electric vehicle sharing and lending programs, incentives, and accessible low-cost charging, all of which Joint Venture is actively pursuing. Joint Venture CEO Russell Hancock pressed cities to track gasoline consumption in a CalMatters opinion piece. He also urged cities to electrify public fleets, publicize annual goals for gasoline reduction, and celebrate milestones. "These approaches may sound tough, but we are in a climate crisis that is already causing widespread death and disaster. Gasoline is the biggest cause of it." |

Joint Venture’s Institute for Regional Studies' October releases include: Food Insecurity & Distribution in Silicon Valley Amid the Pandemic Created in partnership with Second Harvest of Silicon Valley and Silicon Valley Food Recovery, the report illustrates the region’s complex system of food assistance, rising food prices, and how the community has mobilized to meet the increased need. Regional Stock Market Performance Since the Pandemic-Related Decline This Institute report explores how 330 Silicon Valley and San Francisco publicly-traded companies fared in 2020, and shows that the market cap for Silicon Valley stocks, in aggregate, was eleven percent higher in September since the onset of the pandemic. Q3 2020 Commercial Space Report Released quarterly in partnership with JLL, the Q3 2020 report showed a significant decline in commercial leasing activity and a rise in office space vacancies near transit stations. Despite these and other pandemic-related effects on the market, the region is still churning out new commercial developments and an unprecedented amount remains under construction. Silicon Valley Unemployment Rate – September Data Release Unemployment numbers have continued to drop in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties, reaching a new low of 7% since the recent peak in April. |

SVTP has also launched PRO-Files, a LinkedIn group for leaders, volunteers and partners who are passionate about pro bono service. Members are encouraged to share information and opportunities, ask questions, and celebrate success stories. Those experienced in pro bono work from any sector or even those who are pro bono curious are welcome to participate. |

Briggs will soon wrap up her term as chair of Joint Venture’s Economic Development Alliance (SVEDA). Born in Silicon Valley and raised by two public school teachers, Briggs has served the notably business-friendly City of Fremont for more than ten years. At Fremont, her job is to facilitate business expansion, commercial development, and position the City as a manufacturing leader. |
